And her rich voice didn’t reveal her as an eTown novice. While Dickson is an old hat at eTown’s contest, Fairview High School’s Scholfield made her eTown debut last week, also performing individually and collaboratively, with both projects being named finalists. “It’s a prevalent topic nowadays and I wanted to create a song to give people hope,” he said. “It’s basically about helping a friend from committing suicide.”ĭickson said he hasn’t personally been touched by suicide, but has all too often heard of students at Centaurus and area schools who have dealt with it and hopes to bring some light to such a dark issue. “I’ve been working on it for awhile, maybe four months, and I’m just wrapping up the song now,” he said following the competition. Century and Dickson’s personal project also were part of last year’s competition and he was pleased he won this year, with his original, “I’ll Be Alright.” In addition to his performance last week with Knight and McCrosson, he also performed at the Handmade Songs contest with his band Century, though it did not place in the top five. He also represented Colorado youth 21 and younger in January at the International Blues Challenge at the International Blues Foundation’s and affiliated organizations’ 31st annual International Youth Showcase on Beale Street in Memphis, Tenn. I have never been in a space with acoustics like they have and it makes performing really surreal.”Įchoed Dickson, “It’s really exciting to be able to win this contest and record at this new studio, and the video that goes along with it.”ĭickson, on guitar and vocals, is a 17-year-old Centaurus High School musician making a name for himself across Boulder County, with two albums, “Ghost Road” in 2013 and his Coleman Dickson compilation last fall.

“Having a quality recording of my songs is the best prize eTown could offer, because it’s a way to preserve my songs and bring them to their full potential. “I couldn’t believe that both songs I entered won, and was blown away by the rest of the songwriters,” said Scholfield, who performed individually and with the group Covex.

ETown on May 5 hosted its third annual Handmade Songs competition, a music program for young, aspiring high school songwriters that gives them the opportunity to perform and record their original music.
